It doesn’t mean it is over for you

“Even if my father and mother abandoned me, the LORD would take me in.” (Ps 27:10 NET)

Who said the words of our opening bible text? It was David. Why did he say them? Did his mother and father abandon him at some point in his life? No, we do not have any record in the bible that his parents abandoned him at any time. On the contrary, what we are told in the bible is that when King Saul’s hostility towards him became more severe, he brought his parents to the king of Moab for safety (1 Sam 22:3-4).

Since David’s parents, then, never abandoned him, why would he say, “Even if my father and mother abandoned me, the Lord would take me in?” He said that because he wanted people to learn something of his utter dependence on God.

As we know, our relationships with our parents are among the greatest and strongest relationships we can have here on earth. Yet, for some reasons, these relationships may go sour. Yes, for some reasons, our parents may willingly or unwillingly abandon us.

For example, Moses’ parents abandoned him as a baby. That, of course, was not because they wanted to do so. Rather, it was because the circumstances made it impossible for them to protect him. So, they had to give him and hope that God, in His mercy, would spare his life. And did God show him mercy, take him up and spare him or not? He did. Not only did He spare him, He also ensured that he was raised and taken care of in ways that even his parents could not have done in their situation. (Cf. Ex 2:1-10)

So, certain situations may force our parents or others that we love and trust to abandon us. That, however, does not mean that it is over for us. As long as there is breath in us, it is not over for us. All we need to do in such situations, then, is to entrust ourselves completely to God. And He will take us up, as He took up Moses, and turn things around for our good.

But if we have not learnt to trust God when all our relationships are good and enjoyable, how are we going to trust Him when a loving or most cherished relationship goes sour? None of us prays that a good and loving relationship of ours will go sour or become a problem for us. But that can happen. And if it should happen, would that be the end of us? Would we, in such a situation, think of life as over for us?

See, if we have learnt to put our complete trust in God and not in people or relationships, we will not think it is over for us simply because a human relationship fails. Instead, we will just draw closer to Him and wait for Him to heal us and turn things around for our good. That’s because we will know that even if everyone else forsakes us, He will never leave us or abandon us. That is His promise to us. And He is always faithful in keeping His promise. (Cf. Heb 13:5-6)

But if we have not learnt to trust God completely for everything about our lives, if our trust has been in some people or relationships, if those relationships should fail us, we may think it is over for us and give up on life. That explains why some people killed themselves, ran away from home or gave themselves to drunkenness when some relationships failed them.

You, however, don’t have to do that to yourself. You don’t have to ruin your life because of a failed relationship or because some trusted people abandoned you. What you need to do is entrust yourself to God, the God who never leaves nor abandons those who trust in Him. And He will take you up, heal you, wash you and fix everything that is out of place for you. Then your life will begin to overflow with joy and thankfulness again. Amen.

Let us pray:

 Thanksgiving to God because He is a God who never leaves nor forsakes His own people, in spite of the situations in which they may find themselves.
 Prayers that God will teach our hearts to always depend on Him for everything we need in life, so that our hearts will not fail us if any of our human relationships should fail us.
 Prayers that God will show us mercy and move in our lives to heal us and turn things around for our good wherever we are hurting because certain human relationships of ours have failed us, so that we will be rid of all forms of bitterness and anger and be filled with overflowing joy instead.
 Thanksgiving to God for the privilege of praying and receiving.
